Captain Kidd is a 17th-century Scottish mariner and a notorious pirate, originally from Scotland, who commanded a ship called the Adventure Galley. Born William Kidd, he first built his career as a privateer - a sailor authorized by a government to attack the ships of enemy nations during times of war. In Kidd’s case, he was commissioned by English authorities (including colonial governors and supporters in London) to hunt pirates and French ships in the Indian Ocean.
Although he began with a legitimate commission from English officials, Kidd’s mission against pirates was largely unsuccessful. He struggled to capture valuable prizes and, under pressure from his crew, seized the richly laden Armenian ship called the Quedagh Merchant in 1698; an act that would later be judged as piracy because of complicated legal and political circumstances. During his voyage, he also killed one of his own men, gunner William Moore, in a violent dispute, which became one of the charges against him at his trial
Upon returning to the Caribbean and then to New York to clear his name, Kidd was arrested and sent to England. In 1701 he was tried and convicted of piracy and murder, and executed by hanging. His body was subsequently displayed in a gibbet over the River Thames as a gruesome deterrent to others.
Although he became notorious after his execution, Kidd was not necessarily the most destructive or successful pirate in history, and seems to have turned to piracy only out of desperation. He was however, a murderer, and witnesses claim he was a brutal man. Rather than being remembered for a long career of piracy, Kidd’s legend grew largely because of rumors and tales of buried treasure that were never found, sparking centuries-long treasure hunts. Because of this mix of fact and myth, Captain Kidd has become one of the most famous pirate figures in popular culture.
