Percy Harrison Fawcett (1867–1925) was a British explorer, archaeologist, and cartographer whose mysterious disappearance became one of the great unsolved stories of the 20th century. After a distinguished military career and years of mapping uncharted regions in South America, Fawcett became obsessed with finding a legendary lost city he called “Z,” which he believed lay hidden in the jungles of Brazil’s Mato Grosso.

In 1925, Fawcett set out on his final expedition with his son Jack and Jack’s friend Raleigh Rimmel. The group was last heard from near the Upper Xingu River after sending a letter from their camp, optimistically named Dead Horse Camp. Despite numerous search efforts, no trace of the men was ever found.

Tribal accounts suggest Fawcett ignored warnings about dangerous territory and may have been killed by hostile groups, though illness or starvation remain possible explanations.

During his life, Fawcett had become friends with authors such as Conan Doyle and Sir Henry Rider Haggard. Arthur Conan Doyle based his Professor Challenger character partly on Fawcett, and stories of the "Lost City of Z" became the basis for his novel ''The Lost World''.

All published appearances and works of Percy Fawcett from before January 1, )-(95)}} are public domain in the US.

*In 2005, The New Yorker writer David Grann learned from the Kalapalo tribe that Percy Fawcett ignored their warnings and was likely killed after heading east. Grann also reported new evidence of a possible lost civilization, Kuhikugu, near Fawcett’s search which are further detailed in his book ''The Lost City of Z (2009''). Grann's book was the basis of a 2016 feature film of the same name.
