The story begins with the title characters being sent out into the world by their mother, to "seek their fortune". The first little pig builds a house of straw, but a [http://pdsh.wikia.com/wiki/Big_Bad_Wolf wolf] blows it down and eats him.

The second pig builds a house of furze sticks, which the wolf also blows down before eating the pig. Each exchange between wolf and pig features ringing proverbial phrases, namely:

"Little pig, little pig, let me come in."

"No, no, not by the hair on my chinny chin chin."

"Then I'll huff, and I'll puff, and I'll blow your house in."

The third pig builds a house of bricks. The wolf fails to blow down the house. He then attempts to trick the pig out of the house by asking to meet him at various places, but is outwitted each time. Finally, the wolf resolves to come down the chimney, whereupon the pig catches the wolf in a cauldron of boiling water, slams the lid on, and cooks and eats him.

Andrew Lang included it in The Green Fairy Book, published in 1892, but did not cite his source. In contrast to Jacobs's version, which left the pigs nameless, Lang's retelling cast the pigs as Browny, Whitey, and Blacky. It also set itself apart by exploring each pig's character and detailing the interaction between them. The antagonist of this version is a fox, not a wolf. The pigs' houses are made either of mud, cabbage, or brick. Blacky, the third pig, rescues his brother and sister from the fox's den after the fox has been defeated.

One of Uncle Remus' stories, "The Story of the Pigs" (alt. title: "Brer Wolf and the Pigs"), found in Nights with Uncle Remus (1883), is a re-telling of the story, with the following differences:

* There are five pigs in this version: Big Pig, Little Pig, Speckle Pig, Blunt and Runt.
* Blunt is the only male; all the rest are females.
* Big Pig builds a brush house, Little Pig builds a stick house, Speckle Pig builds a mud house, Blunt builds a plank house and Runt builds a stone house.
* The Wolf's verse goes: "If you'll open the door and let me in, I'll warm my hands and go home again."

All published appearances of the Three Little Pigs published before January 1, )-(95)}} are public domain in the US.

* Nursery Rhymes of England (1886)
* English Fairy Tales (1890)
* “The Three Little Pigs,” The Green Fairy Book (1892) – named Browny, Whitey and Blacky
* Nights with Uncle Remus (1883)
* “The Three Little Pigs” (1903) – named Browny, Whitey and Blacky, simplified retelling of Green Fairy version
* “Bedtime Story, 1939 Style,” by Doug Welch (Mar. 1939) – named Porky the Straw, Porky the Wood and Porky the Brick, satire in Esquire

*The Thrifty Pig (1941)
*Pigs in a Polka (1943)

*The story uses the literary rule of three, expressed in this case as a "contrasting three", as the third pig's brick house turns out to be the only one which is adequate to withstand the wolf.
*The earliest published version of the story is from Dartmoor, Devon, England in 1853, and has three little pixies and a fox in place of the three pigs and a wolf.
