The Silver Age version of Dan Garrett was an archaeologist based out of Egypt, who discovered an ancient tomb of the Pharaoh Kha-ef-Re which housed a magical blue scarab. The scarab gave Dan super strength, flight, and the ability to shoot lightning bolts. By uttering the words "Kaji Dha," he would be changed into the hero known as the Blue Beetle.
Dan Garrett becomes the modern host of the Blue Scarab, inheriting a power originally tied to the Great Pharaoh, its ancient first bearer. This links them across time as successive wielders of the same source of power rather than the same identity.
When they encounter the Eye of Horus, the Great Pharaoh and Dan Garrett briefly act as allies, combining ancient knowledge and modern experience to defeat the entity together.
His other enemies included the Red Knight, Mentor the Magnificent, Jeremiah Clugg, Praying Mantis-Man, Magno Man, Mister Crabb, Scorpion, Mr. Thunderbolt, and Jarvis Kord.
Later, his former student, Ted Kord, became the next Blue Beetle after Dan Garrett, was killed in battle with androids created by Ted Kord's Uncle Jarvis in order to take over Earth. As Dan died, he passed on the responsibility of being Blue Beetle to Ted, but was not able to pass on the mystical scarab which gave Garrett his powers.
