Bass Reeves (July 1838 ā January 12, 1910) was a legendary deputy U.S. Marshal, lawman, and one of the first Black deputy marshals west of the Mississippi River. Born into slavery in Arkansas, he escaped during the Civil War and lived in Indian Territory, where he learned the languages, customs, and tracking skills of several Native American tribes.
In 1875, Reeves was appointed as a deputy U.S. Marshal and served for more than 32 years across approximately 75,000 square miles of Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma). Renowned for his exceptional tracking abilities, courage, and integrity, he is credited with making over 3,000 arrests and killing 20 men in the line of duty.
Throughout his career, Reeves pursued notorious outlaws, including Jim Webb and Frank Buck. Despite accidentally shooting his cook, he was acquitted in court. He also demonstrated his commitment to the law by arresting his own son, Benjamin Reeves, who was convicted of murder.
Reeves commonly carried Winchester rifles and a Colt Single Action Army revolver, favoring firearms that used compatible ammunition.
Today, Bass Reeves is celebrated as one of the greatest lawmen of the American Old West. His legacy has been honored through books, films, television portrayals, statues, the Texas Trail of Fame, and landmarks such as the Bass Reeves Memorial Bridge in Oklahoma.

* Some historians believe Bass Reeves may have inspired the fictional character The Lone Ranger, the heroic lawman featured in radio, television, and film. Historian Art T. Burton has described Reeves as "the closest person to resemble the Lone Ranger," pointing to similarities such as his work alongside Native American partners and his practice of giving out souvenir silver dollars. This theory is disputed by historian Martin Grams Jr., author of Bass Reeves e The Lone Ranger: Debunking the Myth.
* Reeves's status as one of the first black Deputy U.S. Marshals plays a significant role as a childhood role model for the character of Will Reeves in the ''Watchmen'' television series.
* Bass Reeves appears in the ''Legends of Tomorrow'' episode "Stressed Western," where he is portrayed by David Ramsey. In the series, Reeves is depicted as the ancestor of John Diggle, Ramsey's character from ''Arrow'', creating a connection between the two shows within the Arrowverse.
