Protector Karnock rules the planet Sirion at the "rim of the system" while his older brother, King Stephen, battles a five-year war against alien invaders. Unfortunately for Sirion's populace, Karnock is a ruthless dictator. Karnock intends to have a brutish noble named Ulgar marry King Stephan's daughter, Princess Valya.

After a five-year war, King Stephan of Sirion, as commander of Earth's space armada, utterly defeats the alien invasion. Stephan informs Administrator Henderson of Karnock's intention to usurp the throne. Henderson speaks to King Stephan about the vital part the King plays in maintaining peace in the system's government. King Stephen sends Space Admiral Jon Lasim to investigate matters.

King Stephan doesn't display any unusual abilities. He is a kind and just ruler.
