Mysteriously appearing and stealing items of seemingly little value, and killing anyone who is an obstacle to obtaining said items, the Smiling Man claims to have met and fought Lightbringer multiple times before their first altercation. He claims to once have had a moral code like Lightbringer's, but something happened to change his world view. He remains undefeated in his encounters with Lightbringer, and at one point recruited the services of the hero's arch-nemesis, the Darkbringer.

Unknown the extents of his power, but he can refract Lightbringer's energy beams, shoot his own energy blasts that look at least in part electric, can open portals to other locations, has shown a lithe dexterity, and can move outside of Euclidean geometry.
