Felix is a friendly anthropomorphic cat created during the silent film era. With his black body, white eyes, and giant grin, he is widely regarded the world's first big animated film star. He debuted as "Master Tom" in the animated short Feline Follies, released by Paramount Studios on November 9, 1919.
In his early animated shorts, Felix was portrayed as a good-hearted but mischievous cat, often embarking on adventures driven by his curiosity or quest for food. The cartoons were known for their surreal and imaginative scenarios, with Felix's expressive tail often transforming into various tools or symbols to aid him in his escapades, such as detaching to use as a baseball bat or climbing up the musical notes suspended in air around him when he whistled.
The early Felix cartoons often reflected contemporary American attitudes and events, incorporating references to topics like Prohibition and the Russian Civil War. Felix's adventures were characterized by their imaginative storytelling and the character's ability to create the fantastic out of the mundane, embodying a sense of wonder that resonated with audiences.
Felix's popularity soared in the 1920s, leading to widespread distribution of his cartoons and extensive merchandising. He became the first animated character to achieve a level of fame that drew audiences based solely on his star power. His success also paved the way for a host of imitators and influenced other animated characters of the time — notably Julius the Cat and Henry The Cat.
His circle of friends include his love-interest Kitty Kat, his nephews Inky and Dinky, Goldie the goose, Old King Cole, a Fox, his goldfish Annabelle, and Poindexter. His various antagonists include the likes of his owner(s), an unnamed rival, The Professor, a mouse named Skiddoo, a rival for affection named Waldo, a dog version of Captain Kidd among others.
The Magic Bag of Tricks is a magic bag owned by Felix the Cat, which was introduced in the Felix the Cat TV series. Although it is usually called The Magic Bag (via title episode), Felix also calls it his "little bag-of-tricks" or simply "Bag(gie)."
It is a one-of-a-kind satchel, which usually takes the form of a suitcase/carpetbag half mix, which is yellow with black markings. (Simpler drawings show the markings as black X's, but a closer look reveals the pattern to be black dots and near-floral, four-point stars.)
While the origin of the magic bag and how it got to be Felix's prized possession remains a mystery until further notice (and even when that story is told, some things will always stay hidden), it is no mystery that Felix uses it well, especially to help others, and those who steal it to use its powers for evil have better think twice, for one clue to its secret is the bag's loyalty to the cat who owns it...in fact, sometimes it has even demonstrated what amounts to a mind of its own!
