Ginger Snapp was a teenage girl who lived in the fictional American town of Hillwood. In her early appearances, she was a shy, somewhat clumsy girl, but she got more confident, outgoing and witty over time. By the time she got her own title, she had an active social life and plenty of boys who were eager to date her. One trait that always remained constant was her love of animals and the desire to protect them from harm.

Ginger's supporting cast evolved over the course of the series. Early stories centered on her parents, J. Whipper and Lotta Snapp, along with her best friend, Dotty. In later stories, the sarcastic Patsy became her closest friend. Her school's principal was originally Mr. Grump before the position was later taken over by Mr. Hummingbird.

Throughout the series, Ginger dated and developed crushes on many boys, but her most significant relationships were with "Whiz" Baker, Hillwood High's star football player; Tommy Turner, a kind-hearted and wholesome student; and Ichabod "Ickky" Jones, a confident and optimistic brainiac. Although she never committed permanently to any of them, Ginger remained especially protective of Tommy and Ickky, valuing them as close friends as well as romantic interests.
