Archie Andrews, the only child of Fred and Mary Andrews, resides in the town of Riverdale, where he attends Riverdale High. He is portrayed as kind-hearted, well-intentioned, and friendly, but is quite clumsy and accident-prone, with many of his mishaps coming from his attempts to help or impress others but resulting in causing further trouble anyway.

Archie is not especially academic and comes from a fairly normal background, having more interest in his social life, having fun, and just relaxing. He has been friends with a number of other students, including his laid back, gluttonous sidekick Jughead Jones, his rival Reggie Mantle, meathead Moose McGee, nerdy Dilton Doily since a young age.

His two main love-interests, all-American girl next door Betty Cooper, and wealthy daddy's girl Veronica Lodge, constantly compete for his attention, with Archie finding it impossible to choose. He is sometimes disaffectionately called Rabbit-face, particularly by Reggie, his friends, especially Jughead call him Arch, while Veronica, calls him Archiekins, and sometimes Lambiekins.

His English teacher is old Miss Grundy, his gym teacher is Coach Kleats, eccentric Professor Flutesnoot is his science teacher, and Waldo Weatherbee is his principal.

He's the proud owner of his Jalopy, an old red lemon of a roadster that he uses to zip around town, particularly to his favorite haunt, the Chok-Lit Shop, owned by jolly old Pop Tate.

He sometimes daydreams himself in various positions such as the superhero Pureheart the Powerful, where he battles other imaginary villains such as Reggie Mantle, as the villainous Evilheart. In other stories set in a different world, Archie is a secret agent of P.O.P., known as The Man From R.I.V.E.R.D.A.L.E. He, alongside his partner Jughead, his secretary Betty, and Weatherbee the chief, battle against the organization C.R.U.S.H. and its agents Reggie and Veronica.

* In the first Archie story in ''Pep Comics'' #22, the narration notes that Archie hates being called "Archie", and prefers to be called "Chick." This is ignored with the next story.
* A parody of Archie named Archer appears in Harvey Kurtzman and Will Elder's story "Goodman Goes Playboy", which is also in the public domain.
* In 1973, Archie artist Al Hartley, became a born again Christian in 1967, had the Archie characters licensed from John Goldwater, producing them for publisher Fleming H. Revell's Spire Christian Comics from 1973-1984, with Dan DeCarlo sometimes contributing. These primarily focused on Christianity, with Betty Cooper in particular as a devout Christian. Their issues featuring the Archie characters published in 1973 lacked copyright notices, Spire generally had a poor record for including copyright notices, particularly for their 1970s releases.
