Lemminkäinen was a young and good-looking hero of Finland, who possessed wavy red hair. In order to win a daughter of Louhi as his wife, Lemminkäinen traveled to an otherworldly place where he must face several challenges such as a ditch full of buring rocks and a fence made of snakes. One of his challenges was to face a horrifying monster named Surma, a large snake-tailed dog that can turn people into stone with but a stare. After he made his way past them, he was served a flagon of beer by his host with snakes hidden beneath the foam, which he nevertheless drinks. After this he kills his host in a battle of magical skills..

The gaptoothed Louhi, Mistress of Pohjola, sent Lemminkäinen on a quest to Tuonela, Land of Death, to kill the Swan of Death that swims on the River of Death. Lemminkäinen drowned in the river, and his mother searched heaven and earth for him. She eventually learned his fate, and asked the smith Ilmarinen to forge her a mighty rake of copper. She descended to the underworld, raking up first Lemminkäinen's tunic and shoes and then his body parts. She sewed the body together, and prayed to the gods for her son's resurrection. While Lemminkäinen was remade, he remained lifeless. Thus, she implored a bumblebee to fly to the halls of Ukko and fetch a drop of honey. With this honey ointment, Lemminkäinen was brought back to life a little better, even more whole than before.
