The embodiment of Death is depicted as a tall skeleton wearing a pleated, silvery robe; he holds a scythe in one hand and, in the other, a large red book adorned with a skull engraving on the cover. A man who drank an experimental immortality serum, John Blane, gains the ability to see Death after surviving accidents that should have otherwise killed him, including being electrocuted, shot in the heart, and run over by a lorry.
After becoming horribly injured, unable to rise from his bed or even see, Blane begs Death to take him even though he drank the serum. Death answers him in a sarcastic tone; his reply suggests that Death ''could'' in fact choose to fulfill Blane's request if he wanted, but is not bound to do so by any higher cosmic principle. Because Blane has scorned death all his life and explicitly “refused his friendship”, Death is disinclined to grant his request, though he tells Blane that he will think about it — with no hurry, given that they both have eternity to wait for Death to make up his mind.
