Dr. John Evelyn Thorndyke, originally a medical doctor, turned to detective work and crime solving, becoming one of the earliest forensic scientists. His solutions depended on his method of gathering all possible data and making inferences from them before looking at the suspects and motives of the crime. He was assisted by his friend Christopher Jervis, who acts as the narrator of the stories, and his lab technician Nathaniel Polton.
