Jughead is a friend of Archie Andrews who resides in the town of Riverdale where he attends Riverdale High. Unlike Archie, Jughead is usually not interested in girls, and usually advises Archie to stay away from them. Regardless, Archie mostly avoids that advice and Jughead is sometimes caught up in Archie's antics. He is often called Juggy by his female friends, especially Betty Cooper, and Veronica Lodge, while his male friends usually call him Jug.

He once tutored Lottie Little, the girlfriend of Moose McGee, who showed interest in Jughead which resulted in her jealous boyfriend giving Jughead a black eye.
Jughead also had a cousin named Souphead Jones who was almost identical to Jughead in appearance, clothing, and personality.

In the world where Archie is the spy called The Man From R.I.V.E.R.D.A.L.E. Jughead serves as his partner, and fellow P.O.P. agent, battling the agents of C.R.U.S.H..

*Although Jughead is usually shown being disinterested or hating women, there are times when he does show interest, such as the covers of ''Pep Comics'' #55 and 68.
*A parody of Jughead named Joghead appears in Harvey Kurtzman and Will Elder's "Goodman Goes Playboy", which is also in the public domain.
*In 1973, Archie artist Al Hartley, who had become a born again Christian in 1967, had the Archie characters licensed from John Goldwater, producing them for publisher Fleming H. Revell's Spire Christian Comics from 1973-1984, with Dan DeCarlo sometimes contributing. These primarily focused on Christianity, with the gang shown as Christians. Their issues featuring the Archie characters published in 1973 lacked copyright notices, Spire generally had a poor record for including copyright notices, particularly for their 1970s releases.
