Davy is an orphan who lives with his dog, Bumper, in a shack in Buttercup Alley. The Grogans, his only neighbors, torment him day and night, until one day he wishes he were someplace else and a big puff of smoke flies him off. The smoke takes human shape and tells him that anything he wishes can come true. Davy is a little taken aback by this all going to hide in his shack.

The Grogans find out about this wishing puff of smoke and now they really want to take control of the boy. They manage to capture him but Davy’s dog Bumper rescues him and the wish being of smoke takes them to safety. No matter because Ma Grogan has magic firewood that summons the devil, she can make a contract with. Davy wishes for money and suddenly everybody in the neighborhood wants to steal it. The Grogans continue to make deals with Satan to also steal the money. When they get the money Davy wishes the money would turn into leaves to further frustrate the Grogans.
