Charlie Chan is a Chinese-American detective working for the Honolulu police force, known for his calm demeanor, keen intelligence, and methodical approach to solving crimes. Rather than relying on force, he uses observation, logic, and patience to unravel complex mysteries, often exposing the culprit through careful deduction.

He’s portrayed as a wise, courteous, and morally upright individual, often sharing philosophical sayings or proverbs. Despite his reserved personality, he is highly effective and respected, often outsmarting other investigators

In his personal life, Chan is a devoted family man with a large number of children (commonly depicted as fourteen), and his sons sometimes assist him in his investigations. Although his stories often begin in Hawaii, he is famous for solving mysteries in many parts of the world.

Physically, he is described as a large man, but his light walk and graceful posture belie his size. He presents himself inconspicuously in Western attire and maintains an attitude of impassiveness and stoicism.

* Zaza the Mystic #10: After the license ended, the comic book changed its name to ''Zaza the Mystic''. In ''Zaza the Mystic'' number 10, a pastiche of Charlie Chan named Louie Lou appeared. Louie also refers to his eldest son as Number One Son.

* Chan was loosely based on two real life Hawaiian detectives Chang Apana and Lee Fook.
* Chan was conceived as a benevolent and heroic alternative to Yellow Peril stereotypes and villains prevalent in contemporary media, like Fu Manchu. Though despite the intention, modern interpretations also note that aspects of his portrayal reflect outdated cultural stereotypes from the era in which he was created.
* During the 1930s and 1940s, five Chan films were produced in Shanghai and Hong Kong. In these films, Chan, played by Xu Xinyuan (徐莘园), owns his detective agency and is aided not by a son but by a daughter, Manna, played first by Gu Meijun (顾梅君) in the Shanghai productions and then by Bai Yan (白燕) in postwar Hong Kong. In 1950, another Chinese film was released, Mystery of the Jade Fish, starring and directed by Lee Ying.
* Chan was played by a Japanese actor in his first film, however, in many he was played by Western actors wearing Yellow Face makeup (like Fu Manchu).
* Charlie Chan is known for his use of aphorisms and phrases taken from Chinese proverbs, however, this characteristic was created in the films (like "Elementary, My Dear Watson" by Sherlock Holmes).
* In 1941, Dixie Dugan appeared in the Charlie Chan comic strip, which was also distributed by the McNaught Syndicate. This story was reprinted in Big Shot Comics #62.
* The [https://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1256882 cover of issue 10] was already prepared and illustrated by Dan Barry before the license ended. It showed Chan, his children, and the driver Birmingham.
