Hammerhead Hawley operated off the Aleutian Islands using the a state-of-the-art one-man submarine to wage war against the Japanese warships. His secret base was accessed by an underwater passage and located inside a dormant volcano. The secret base was run by an African named Whitey.
Hawley's origin was that he had formerly been in command of the submarine called the Mataray on which Whitey also served. However after it was sunk by U-boats, the survivors including Hawley and Whitey escaped to a nearby island.
Later, they manage to capture a small Japanese one-man submarine amongst other materials they salvaged which Hawley and his men reverse engineered into creating a new sub resembling a hammerhead shark.
