The '''Green Giant''' was born in Minnesota. His origins trace back to 1903 when the Minnesota Valley Canning Company was founded in Le Sueur, Minnesota. In 1925, the company introduced a new variety of large, sweet peas and dubbed them “Green Giant” peas. To promote the peas, the company created a Green Giant mascot in 1928.
The original mascot had very little in common with the familiar green figure seen today, being a scowling, stooped-over caveman wearing a bearskin rather than foliage, designed by John Olson from northwestern Minnesota. In 1928, the company changed the skin color of the giant from white to green. They also added foliage to his outfit.
*The Green Giant is still trademarked, so can only be used within a story, not to promote an unrelated brand.
