'''Private Snafu''' was a buffoonish and irresponsible solider created by Frank Capra for the War Department during WWII to educate and demonstrate to enlisted soldiers what '''not''' to do while at war.

In "Malaria Mike," Snafu neglects his malaria medication and repellent, leading to his death at the hands of a suave mosquito.

In "Spies," he leaks classified information, leading to an ambush by the Germans and Japanese that literally blows him to Hell.

In "Censored", Snafu tries to send his girlfriend, Sally Lou, a message revealing the location of a future military operation. However after a terrible nightmare, he realizes the danger of revealing sensitive information and properly censors his letter.

In nine shorts, Snafu receives advice from the Technical Fairy, a crass miniature G.I. who would appear to grant Snafu's wishes, usually skipping protocol or doing things the quick and sloppy way. However, the results often end tragically, with the Technical Fairy teaching Snafu a valuable lesson about proper military procedure.

In later cartoons Snafu's antics became more savvy, becoming more heroic in facing the enemy head-on. And even though the pay was lower, he continued serving in the army in the years following the war.

Snafu's family was also shown to be helping with the war effort at home with his parents building tanks and planting a victory garden, his grandpa building ships in a shipyard, and his girlfriend joining the Women's Army Corps (WAC). He has a sailor brother named Seaman Tarfu

* The name "Snafu" comes from the unofficial military acronym SNAFU, for "Situation Normal: All F*cked Up." This was deemed too-strong language even for their target audience, so the opening narrator merely hints at its meaning: "Situation Normal, All ''Fouled'' Up!"
** The character was given the name John McRoger in 1955's ''A Hitch in Time'', implying that Snafu might've been a nickname.
* In 1946, a series of spinoff cartoons for the Navy featuring Private Snafu's brother "Seaman Tarfu" (for "Things Are Really F*cked Up") was planned, but the war came to a close and the project never materialized, save for a single cartoon entitled "Private Snafu Presents Seaman Tarfu in the Navy". In the cartoon "Three Brothers", it is revealed that Snafu has two brothers, a carrier pigeon keeper named Tarfu and a dog trainer named Fubar (for "F*cked Up Beyond All Repair").
