__TOC__

Lyman is the owner of Spot and the roommate of his tennis rival Jon Arbuckle and his cat Garfield. He is less outwardly sarcastic than Jon, but is just as prone to anger, is more stern and disciplinary a pet owner than Jon is, and can come off as rude when he's intending to be sincere.

* Jon
**January 22nd, 1976 - August 25th, 1977
* Garfield
**September 1st, 1977 - February 16th, 1978

* The original ''Jon'' comics were published without a copyright notice.
* On September 1, 1977 the ''Jon'' comic strip was renamed ''Garfield.''
* February 16, 1978 was the last regular strip prior to syndication and the last of the strips that did not use a United Feature Syndicate copyright line.
* When ''Jon'' was adapted for mainstream syndication as ''Garfield'', the Lyman character was slowly phased out, with multiple pieces of ''Garfield'' media giving contradictory answers on his whereabouts, most of which being dark jokes.
* The name Lyman was first used by Jim Davis for a character in ''Gnorm Gnat''.
