'''Spark Plug''' is a bow-legged nag of a racehorse that seldom raced. Barney Google's beloved "brown-eyed baby" was typically seen almost totally covered by his trademark patched blanket with his name scrawled on the side.

Spark Plug possesses a mischievous streak and often displays a playful demeanor, especially when outsmarting Barney or evading trouble. Despite his antics, he is fiercely loyal to Barney and shares in his adventures with unwavering determination, often coming to his aid in times of need.

*Millions of readers followed Spark Plug's debut race in the comic strip, which turned into a nationwide media spectacle. DeBeck, who had planned to retire the character, made him a permanent member of the cast. Because of Sparky's success in the 1920s, kids started nicknaming themselves "Sparky" after their favorite character, notably Charles M. Schulz, who later created ''Peanuts''.
