Puss in Boots was the titular character of European fairy tale of the same name about an anthropomorphic cat who uses trickery and deceit to gain power, wealth, and the hand in marriage of a princess for his penniless and low-born master.

He becomes the servant (or companion) of the youngest son of a miller. When the miller dies, his estate is divided among his sons — the youngest ends up with only the family cat. Puss asks for a pair of boots (and a bag), convincing the son to grant his request, arguing that with boots he can "go out and be seen among people." With human-like intelligence and guile, the feline returns the favor by turning his master’s nearly worthless inheritance into a path to wealth and nobility.

Using bluffs, he hunts game and presents it as gifts — claiming they come from his master, the fictional "Marquis of Carabas." Puss stages elaborate deceptions, including tricking an ogre into transforming into a mouse and then devouring him, to claim the ogre's castle and lands for his master to deceive the king. Though he is cunning, Puss is dedicated to improving the lot of his master, despite the master’s initial low prospects.

The oldest written telling version Costantino Fortunato (Italian for "Lucky Costantino") by Italian author Giovanni Francesco Straparola, included in The Facetious Nights of Straparola (c. 1550–1553), in which the cat is a fairy in disguise who helps his owner, a poor boy named Costantino, to gain his princess by duping a king, a lord and many commoners.

Later adaptations try to make Puss’ character more endearing and less deceptive. The 1934 ComiColor cartoon by Ub Iwerks Studios reimagines Puss as a helpful motivator, aiding a wannabe ministerial in his quest to rescue the king's daughter from the shapeshifting ogre. He is also shown to be father of three rowdy kittens who accompany him on his adventure.
