Buffalo Bill, born William Frederick Cody in 1846, epitomized the rugged spirit of the American West. His early life was defined by adventure, from cattle driving to serving as a Pony Express rider. During the Civil War, he gained fame as a Union soldier and scout, earning the moniker "Buffalo Bill" for his reputed buffalo hunting skills.

After the war, Cody capitalized on his reputation by creating Buffalo Bill's Wild West show. This spectacle toured America and Europe, showcasing cowboy skills, Native American culture, and reenactments of frontier battles. While celebrated for popularizing the Wild West, Cody's portrayal of Native Americans has been criticized as exploitative, despite his personal admiration for their culture. Nonetheless, his legacy endures as a symbol of the frontier era's adventurous spirit. Cody passed away in 1917, but his legend continues to fascinate and inspire.

In October 1927, James Carroll Mansfield launched the comic strip ''Buffalo Bill, Scout of Scouts'' for McClure Newspaper Syndicate, depicting Cody’s youth. It appeared either as part of his series ''High Lights of History'' (1924–1942) or within ''Our History in Pictures''. That same year, Harry F. O’Neill launched Young Buffalo Bill, about a boy’s adventures in the West. The strip eventually evolved into Broncho Bill in 1932, O’Neill illustrated for United Feature Syndicate from June 7, 1927, to July 8, 1950. After his departure, Fred Meagher produced six additional strips between July 10 and 15, 1950, plus the July 17 installment. On July 18, the title changed once again, this time to Buffalo Bill, whether this character was meant to represent the historical figure or simply a new protagonist under the famous name is unclear. In the storyline, Broncho dies and Buffalo Bill takes over the strip, which continued until 1956.
