Despite facing cruelty and mistreatment from Miss Minchin and some of the staff, Sara remains humble and kind-hearted, refusing to let her circumstances define her. She treats everyone with respect regardless of their social status, including those who find her annoying or mistreat her, and shows compassion and generosity, even sharing her belongings with less fortunate girls. She often retreats into her fantasies, imagining herself as a prisoner in the Bastille or a princess disguised as a servant facing adversity.
