The '''"Champion Mouse Catcher"''' is a cat who was recently adopted into a barn, as his name would suggest, he is a ruthless mouse catcher with razor sharp claws, having killed a chunk of Herman's relatives and deprived the rest of cheese - Herman consistently outsmarts the mouse catcher and allows his relatives to get their cheese, and eventually kills him and his other 8 lives, before being chased away by their vengeful spirits.
In ''Cat O' Nine Ails'', The cat (referred by a synopsis as Sam the Cat) acts more dimwitted, thinking that eating crows will cure his medical condition, he later stumbles across Buzzy the Crow, planning to cook him, however the clever crow outsmarts him by tricking himself into harmful "cures".
In ''Hep Cat Symphony'', the cat’s (Now called '''A.Hep Cat''') peace is disturbed by a group of musical mice practicing in the walls. Annoyed by their constant playing, the cat takes on the persona of the Pied Piper to lure them away and restore his quiet. However, his clever scheme backfires when the mice turn the tables on him, making him the butt of the joke once again.
In'' Saved by the Bell'', the cat becomes the target of the mice’s plan to protect themselves after Herman the Mouse sells them a warning bell. The cat tries to prevent this but ends up in a chaotic chase as Herman struggles to attach the bell to him. In the end, the cat’s attempt to get the bell himself fails disastrously—he falls from a tower, symbolizing his downfall and the mice’s victory.

* The Cat would eventually be redesigned and renamed Katnip (not to be confused with the Disney character) making his first official appearance in ''Mice Meeting You (1950)'', and would appear in subsequent ''Herman & Katnip'' cartoons. Mice Meeting You (1950) was renewed on January 2nd 1979 and is not in the public domain, Katnip’s redesign has orange fur and lighter paws.
* The ''Herman & Katnip'' series has been noted as being more violent than other predator-and-prey cartoon acts like MGM's ''Tom & Jerry'', and has been cited as an inspiration for ''The Simpsons''' fictional cartoon-within-a-cartoon, ''Itchy & Scratchy.''
* Katnip appearance in Cat O'Nine Ails would set a precedent for his dim-witted personality and formula with his pairings of Buzzy the Crow that would be seen in later cartoons.
* In Naughty But Mice (1947), Katnip was voiced by Sid Raymond. In Hep Cat Symphony (1949), Katnip (as "A. Hep Cat") was voiced by Jack Mercer, Sid Raymond would be his main voice actor, but Jack Mercer would sometimes take the role of Katnip in some cartoons
