Bonzo the Dog is a beloved cartoon character created by British artist George Studdy in the 1920s. Created around the same time as similar cartoons like Felix the Cat, Bonzo quickly became a popular icon not only in the United Kingdom, but was one of the first cartoon characters to be loved around the globe.
Bonzo is a small, white, black-spotted, pudgy puppy with saggy skin, a droopy face, large expressive blue eyes, floppy ears (one black and one white), and a short, stubby tail. One of Bonzo's defining traits is his expressive face, which Studdy masterfully captured in his illustrations. Whether he's excited, surprised, or perplexed, Bonzo's emotions are vividly portrayed, making him feel readable even in silent media.
Bonzo frequently acts as a stand-in for the average person. He is inherently curious and impulsive, often getting into trouble through harmless schemes - stealing food, chasing cats, or meddling in human affairs. Rarely are his antics cruel; instead, they are motivated by curiosity and instinct. When things go wrong, they are never catastrophic; instead, he responds to them with optimistic uncertainty or perseverance.
Unlike many later "purely innocent" cartoon animals, Bonzo reflects adult behavior in a comedic, satirical way. He mocks human pretenses and upper-class attitudes while drinking, gambling, and flirting in certain strips, exhibiting a wry understanding of societal standards. This appeal made him both charming to children while also slyly humorous for adults.
Apart from his human caregivers, Bonzo is frequently alone. However, he occasionally interacts with a female companion, a Chinese Pekinese identified as "Chee-Kee," who serves to ground his more social or domestic situations.
