Lorraine Collett, a real person, was one of the young girls who attended the 1915 Panama–Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco. Collett was part of the California Associated Raisin Company, which promoted the raisin industry by handing out samples to visitors, promoting Sun-Maid's activities at the Exposition. Collett posed at artist Fanny Scafford's studio and spent the day working at the Expo, where the Sun-Maid girls were all wearing red bonnets. In 1916, Collett was chosen as the company's mascot.
