After the Deacon saved his life, Mickey Matthews became his young sidekick. He was also best friends with Cat-Man's sidekick, the Kitten, and they formed the Little Leaders.

Rusty would also form the team known Pals of Freedom together with the Flag-Man's sidekick Rusty and two other youth, Spec and Peanuts. The team fought the Crimson Hood, a Nazi saboteur marked by a red hood bearing a white swastika on the forehead, but it was only with the help of the Deacon and Flag-man that he was captured.
