Halfwitch is a little girl witch who has limited powers of witchcraft. She lives in a fantasy world at some indeterminate point in the past, in a small cottage in the forest with her Cousin Maggie (a much older witch) and a Transylvanian bat named Fraidy Bat.

Halfwitch is disappointed because Maggie refuses to take her on a flight on her magic broomstick. She can’t fly on the broomstick until she grows up, and Halfwitch knows it won’t be for a long time. In her world, it takes up to five hundred years for witch children to reach adulthood.

While Maggie is away, Fraidy Bat instructs Halfwitch to use Cousin Maggie’s book of magic spells to make herself bigger. Consequently, Halfwitch grows to a gigantic size, which she finds has its advantages, but also its drawbacks. In the end, Cousin Maggie returns Halfwitch to her normal size and permits her to fly on the broomstick despite her young age.
