Sue was a young girl who could play the violin & use a lasso who lived in the circus. She was given her violin by Clown Pete who said it once belonged to a great musician.

Her friend Sam was an orphan who helped clean-up after the animals. He had a pet monkey named Jojo. Sue's guardian is Madame Renee who had a daughter named Rosy. Rosy mistreated Sue, Sam, and Joe going as far as smashing Sue's violin over Jojo's head.

Sam goes to see Mr. Shaw who runs the circus to get Jojo checked on after his injury meanwhile Renee and Rosy are preforming with Blimp the Elephant. Jojo runs into the circus tent wanting to attack Rosy in revenge, but Sue saves her with her rope skills.

Later Sam & Sue attempt to run away to New York to find Sue's real mother but they witness Rosy being kidnapped by some crooks. They save her and Mr. Shaw rewards their heroism with a party the next day.

They eventually try to escape again meeting Carlo the Gypsy who lets them stay him and his group. They meet a violin maestro in New York who offers to take in Sue and Sam after learning of Sue's talent with music and because she reminded him of his deceased daughter. Carlo the Gypsy however wanted custody of Sue himself, but eventually backs off.

Meanwhile Madame Renee receives a message from Sue's real mother Margo and goes to visit her in the hospital. It is reveled by a flashback that Margo and Renee were sisters who performed in the circus in France during WWI where Margo had fallen in love with a soldier named Andre. Andre was killed in the line of duty and in her grief Margo married an older violin maestro who loved her instead. they eventually came to America where Margo was hospitalized due to her health.

Meanwhile Renee left for America with her future husband, but was eventually abandoned by him forced to live in poverty. Her father passed away during that time but left all his money to Margo since Renee had left him when he needed her companionship. She kidnapped her niece Sue making her parents believe that she was dead for years.

Madame Renee is eventually jailed for kidnapping while Carlo the Gypsy loses his life. Margo is given custody of Rosy and comes to live in the circus with Sue and the maestro. Both Rosy and Carlo's friend Jon the Gypsy want revenge and seek to each sabotage the circus to frame or injure Sue and Sam. They sabotage a trapeze act nearly killing the performer and then get Blimp the elephant to attack Sue. She begs for the elephant not to be shot because it was just frightened by something. Sam and her investigate and discover a clue that points back to Jon the Gypsy being the culprit.
