Carmen is first seen holding a tray with a mug of beer while walking across a cantina and dancing to the music "Habanera", where she approaches Don José whom she tries to attract his attention. José then gives Carmen a cent for the beer she gave to him. She later dances in front of José to impress him, which he feels satisfied, just as he gives her another cent - though it falls into a pot instead. Later, a toreador name "Escamillo" approaches Carmen who is arguing with José, which Escamillo intervenes, putting José as a hated rival. Escamillo then becomes Carmen's love interest, happy that she found her interest.

Later during a bullfighting match, Carmen watches Escamillo fight against a bull during a battle where she cheers on her love interest in a seat reserved for her, much to José feeling jealous. During the event, Escamillo interacts with the bull during a fight between them during a comic fight, impressing Carmen who holds a bouquet of flowers at him while Don José sprinkles some pepper on the bouquet before Carmen tosses them at Escamillo, causing the bull to have a sneezing fit leading to Escamillo's victory in finishing off the bull, impressing Carmen again.
