Ginger Meggs was a red-haired prepubescent mischief-maker who lives in an inner suburban working-class household. Ginger first appeared in Us Fellers on November 13, 1921, drawn by Jimmy Bancks and would become one of Australia's most popular and the longest-running comic strips.

The Us Fellers comic strip was originally focused on Gladsome Gladys, a sweet and pretty little girl who used her charm to get them out of trouble, but as her creator got tired of using her he dropped her a few months later to focus Ginger who had been minor character up to that point.

Since the newspaper the strip appeared in only had a limited range of inks available — blue, red and yellow — the character was given red hair and originally named Ginger Smith but by April 1922 had the new surname of Meggs.
