Captain Alfonso Payton, the '''Sky Pirate''', is portrayed as a daring and sophisticated air plunderer. Described as a handsome and refined Spanish-American, he commands the airship "Chameleon." In June 1936 (the fictitious time period set in the book), Payton kidnaps Helen Grayman, the daughter of a New York billionaire, along with her maid, from her bedroom.
