Ann is character created to represent Anopheles, the genus of the mosquitoes that transmit the disease (Malaria). She is a carrier of malaria who is a “real party gal,” who moves at night and who has a thirst for the blood of every G.I. stationed in tropical climates. “She can make you feel like a combination of a forest fire, a January blizzard, and an old dish mop,”. She's at home in Africa, the Caribbean, India, the South and Southwest Pacific and other Hot Spots.
She's the only one in the world who can give you Malaria, so if you can beat her, you're safe.
Ann moves around at night, anytime from dusk to sunrise (a real party gal), and she's got a thirst. No whiskey, gin, beer,
or rum coke for Ann; she drinks Blood. Ann stands on her head to get blood from her unsuspecting victims.

In 1943, Germany blocked the Allies' supply of the anti-malaria drug quinine. So Geisel created a booklet explaining to the troops how to avoid harmful encounters with "blood-thirsty Ann," the character he created to represent Anopheles, the genus of the mosquitoes that transmit the disease.

Anopheles Annie, the malaria mosquito, is portrayed as the “vixen” of the insect world, spreading disease to men who failed to take proper precautions.
