Mochizuki Chiyome was a 16th-century Japanese poet and noblewoman who was the wife of Mochizuki Moritoki. She is known for allegedly creating a group of kunoichi, female ninja, in service of the Takeda clan. She was also believed to be a descendant of Kōga ninja.
She recruited girls to be ninja who were prostitutes, widows and/or had been orphaned or abandoned, and she trained her girls in several different arts including religion, sexuality and martial arts. They were trained to disguise themselves as actresses, prostitutes, shrine maidens, and geisha.
Their religious training also helped them use one of their most effective disguises as a shrine maiden (miko). This is because miko could freely wandered the countryside unchaperoned. This made for an excellent disguise since no one questioned why a lone shrine maiden was on her own nor would people suspect her of being a spy.
