Rusty was the sidekick of Flag-Man a.k.a. Captain (later Major) Hornet. They fought enemies such as Baroness Hartlesse, who could not be dealt with by military regulations or by the law, and were active both on the home front as well as in the South Pacific against the Japanese.

Rusty would form the team known as the Pals of Freedom together with the Deacon’s sidekick, Mickey, and two other youths, Spec and Peanuts. The team fought the Crimson Hood, a Nazi saboteur marked by a red hood bearing a white swastika on the forehead, but it was only with the help of the Deacon and Flag-Man that he was captured.

While he had no super-powers, like his mentor, Rusty was an agile and skilled fighter.
