Lucy Munro is the young daughter of Effie Munro (née Hebron) and her first husband, John Hebron, an African‑American lawyer from Atlanta who died of yellow fever. Lucy survived the illness, though she remained in America due to her own frail health.

Effie later brought her to England in secret, using £100 granted by Grant Munro (her second husband), fearing that revealing her daughter's existence and interracial parentage would jeopardize their marriage. Effie hired a Scottish nurse and had Lucy live in a nearby cottage in Norbury, concealed completely. When first observed by Grant and later Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, Lucy appears as a mysterious figure at the window, wearing a mask painted in an eerie yellow tone and long white gloves.

Though Lucy is only briefly onstage, her presence dramatically shifts the narrative - prompting a rare misdiagnosis from Holmes. Grant's jealousy is initially interpreted as signs of blackmail or a sinister ulterior motive. But upon removing the mask to reveal the child's mixed‑race heritage and hearing Effie's confession, Grant Munro lovingly accepts Lucy as his stepdaughter, lifting her up in his arms and giving Effie a loving embrace.
