'''Esther Victoria Blodgett''' begins as a hopeful aspiring actress from rural North Dakota, with dreams that her skeptical family, including her father and aunt, dismiss as unrealistic. A chance job waitressing at a Hollywood party leads to her discovery by fading star Norman Maine, who arranges a screen test for her. Impressed, studio producer Oliver Niles signs her and gives her a glamorous new name: '''Vicki Lester'''.

Her breakout role opposite Norman in ''The Enchanted Hour'' catapults her into fame, while Norman’s career slips due to his drinking. Esther and Norman fall in love and elope; her faith in him is strong, and he promises to quit drinking. Yet, as she rises, his alcoholism resurfaces, culminating in a public scandal when he disrupts her acceptance speech and embarrasses her. Despite her growing career, Esther cares deeply for Norman—even agreeing to pause her career in order to rehabilitate him. Tragically, Norman ultimately ends his life, leaving Esther devastated.

Bereft and ready to give up, Esther is comforted by her grandmother, who shares a heartfelt letter from Norman expressing his pride and love for her. Inspired, Esther returns to her career with grace before reclaiming her identity. At her next film premiere, standing in front of the public, she greets fans with the poignant line:

“Hello, everybody. This is Mrs. Norman Maine.”
