A White Lady (or woman in white) is a type of female ghost. She is typically dressed in a white dress or similar garment, reportedly seen in rural areas and associated with local legends of tragedy. White Lady legends are found in many countries around the world. Common to many of these legends is an accidental or impending death, murder, or suicide and the theme of loss, betrayed by a husband or fiancé, and unrequited love.

In popular medieval legend, a White Lady is fabled to appear by day as well as by night in a house in which a family member is soon to die. They also appear within photos just before or after death. According to The Nuttall Encyclopædia, these spirits were regarded as the ghosts of deceased ancestors.

Known as Dama Branca or Mulher de Branco, she is said to be the ghost of a young woman who died in childbirth or by violence. She appears in a white dress or gown, sometimes recounting her misfortunes. Folklorist Luís da Câmara Cascudo links the myth to “honor killings” of young women, often for suspected adultery or defiance. Monteiro Lobato told of a woman starved by her husband, then fed only the flesh of a slave he killed.

The Dame Blanche haunts Montmorency Falls near Quebec City. She is the spirit of a young woman whose fiancé died in the Battle of Beauport. Grieving, she leapt into the falls in her wedding dress. A nearby waterfall is named '''Chute de la Dame Blanche'''.

The best-known is Perchta of Rožmberk (1429–1476). Trapped in an unhappy marriage, she refused to forgive her cruel husband on his deathbed and was cursed. After death, she appeared at Rožmberk Castle and nearby towns, often as a portent of misfortune.

At Haapsalu Castle, a woman disguised as a choirboy was discovered with a canon she loved. As punishment, she was sealed inside a chapel wall. On clear August full moons, she is said to appear at the window in mourning.

White Ladies (Weiße Frauen) haunt castles, often as omens of death.

* Kunigunda of Orlamünde allegedly killed her children to wed Albert of Nuremberg, later became a nun, and after death haunted Plassenburg Castle.
* A White Lady was reported in the Berliner Schloss from 1598 until 1940, associated with Anna Sydow, imprisoned lover of Joachim II of Brandenburg.
* Other legends place White Ladies at Düsseldorf Castle, Friedland, Lahneck Castle, Haus Aussel, and Uhlberg Monastery ruins, usually tied to betrayal, murder, or imprisonment.

White Ladies are ghosts of young women who died violently—through murder, suicide, or imprisonment—often bound to one place, sometimes linked to figures like Elizabeth Báthory.

At Charles Fort, a bride killed herself on her wedding night after her father slew her husband. She returns each year, screaming on her anniversary.

Witte Wieven (“white women”) are spirits tied to mounds and moors, sometimes witches or wise women. They can help in childbirth or punish wrongdoers, and may abduct children or women. In Schinveldse Bossen forest, a White Lady is said to haunt the ruins of a 14th-century castle farm burned in the 1600s.

The most famous is the White Lady of Balete Drive in Quezon City—a long-haired woman in white who appears to taxi drivers, sometimes bloodied. Some say the tale was fabricated in the 1950s.

The Maidens of Uley legend tells of Bulzhuuhai Duuhai, who resisted marriage and killed herself after mistreatment. She became a spirit, joining hundreds of maidens who haunt grooms on their wedding day.

In Koprivica, a bride in white haunts the road at night. Versions say she died in a car crash on her honeymoon or hanged herself after being abandoned.

At Rouelbeau Castle, the ghost of Humbert de Choulex’s repudiated wife appears on Christmas Eve or moonlit nights, sometimes rewarding or punishing visitors. A nearby road is named Chemin de la Dame Blanche.

A modern tale tells of teens dying after encountering a woman in white near a Bangkok house, said to be a vengeful ghost named “Dao.”

* England: White Ladies haunt Blenkinsopp Castle (linked to hidden treasure), roads like Beeford Straight, and castles such as Portchester, Okehampton, and Berry Pomeroy. Some appear at Christmas or are tied to tragic deaths.
* Wales: Y Ladi Wen appears on Halloween, warning children or guarding treasure. At Ogmore Castle, she punished a greedy man who stole more than she allowed.

* New York: The Lady in the Lake haunts Durand-Eastman Park, mourning her murdered daughter.
* Virginia: At Avenel, the ghost of Mary Frances Burwell waits for her husband lost in the Civil War.
* Connecticut: Union Cemetery’s White Lady has been reported since the 1940s.
* Pennsylvania: The “White Lady of Whopsy” haunts Wopsononock Mountain after a fatal crash.
* California: White Lady tales appear at Calico Ghost Town and Fremont’s Niles Canyon.
* Texas: At White Rock Lake, a soaked woman in a 1930s dress asks drivers for a ride, then vanishes, leaving only a wet seat.
