Catherine II, born Princess Sophie of Anhalt-Zerbst, became Empress of Russia in 1762 after overthrowing her husband, Peter III. Her 34-year reign marked Russia’s Golden Age, defined by cultural flourishing, territorial expansion, and Enlightenment-inspired reforms.

Under her rule, Russia modernized along Western European lines—founding cities, universities, and theatres, and attracting European immigrants. Catherine expanded the empire through military victories and diplomacy: annexing the Crimea, partitioning Poland, and establishing Russian America in Alaska. Key figures such as Grigory Orlov, Grigory Potemkin, and generals Suvorov and Rumyantsev aided her efforts.

Despite her Enlightenment ideals, Catherine maintained serfdom, leading to unrest like Pugachev’s Rebellion. She confirmed the Manifesto on Freedom of the Nobility, freeing nobles from state service, which fueled the rise of a powerful aristocracy.
An admirer of Peter the Great, Catherine promoted education and culture, founding the Smolny Institute of Noble Maidens, the first state-funded higher education institution for women in Europe. She is remembered as an enlightened despot who brought Russia to the forefront of European power and culture.
