Gorgo was the only child of King Cleomenes I, and she became both wife and advisor to King Leonidas I, who led the Spartans at the Battle of Thermopylae.

Raised as Spartan royalty, Gorgo received both a physical and intellectual education—training in athletics, literacy, music, and poetry. Spartan women were educated to be strong in body and mind, reflecting the belief that powerful offspring came from powerful parents. Even as a child, she demonstrated keen judgment: when Aristagoras of Miletus attempted to bribe her father into war, young Gorgo advised him to walk away—advice he wisely followed.

After her father’s death in 489 BC, Gorgo married her half-uncle, King Leonidas I. Though Spartan queens held no formal title or power, Gorgo’s counsel was respected. She famously deciphered a hidden message warning Sparta of Xerxes’ planned invasion by suggesting the wax be scraped from a tablet—an act that earned her recognition as one of history’s earliest known female cryptanalysts.

Gorgo’s wit and strength became legendary. When told that Spartan women were the only ones who ruled their men, she replied, “Yes, for we are the only ones who give birth to men.” Before Leonidas departed for Thermopylae, she asked how she should live if he fell; his advice was to remarry well and live nobly.

Gorgo and Leonidas had one known son, King Pleistarchus, who ruled Sparta after his father’s death. During his youth, Sparta was governed by regents, including the renowned general Pausanias.
