Ame-no-Uzume-no-Mikoto is the Shinto goddess of humor, dance, joy, dawn, mirth, meditation, revelry, and the arts. Best known for luring the sun goddess Amaterasu out of hiding with her comedic, ecstatic dance, she plays a key role as a bringer of light and celebration. She is the wife of Sarutahiko Ōkami, and sometimes identified with Ōmiyanome-no-Ōkami, an Inari-associated deity. Called “The Great Persuader” and “The Heavenly Alarming Female,” she is also portrayed in kyōgen comedic theater as Okame, a figure of playful sensuality.
