The ''Three Bears'' are a family of talking bears who live on a wildlife reserve. When winter comes, the bears prepare for their annual hibernation until the two cubs, Nikomi and Chinook, learn about Christmas and Santa Claus from the friendly park ranger. Ever curious and imaginative, the two siblings become filled with excitement at the prospect of seeing Santa, resisting the idea of immediately hibernating — they want to wait, stay awake, and see if Santa will come.

Nana, their single mother, is practical and deeply skeptical about the Christmas legend. When her cubs get enchanted by the idea of Santa, she bluntly tells them there is no Santa — from her perspective, there's no need for such fantasies as they prepare for hibernation, emphasizing the sameness and routine of bear life. But her children's excitement makes ”sleep" impossible. Despite her cynicism, she is protective and maternal, wanting her cubs to rest and survive the harsh winter.

In the end, while they wind up missing out on seeing Santa, the bears wind up waking up later on to find their cave inexplicably filled with gifts left by the jolly old elf, cheering the family up.
