Tituba was an enslaved Native American woman owned by Samuel Parris, the minister of Salem Village, Massachusetts. Likely born in the Caribbean, possibly Barbados, she may have been exposed to occult practices before arriving in Massachusetts. She was married to a man called John Indian, whose origins are unclear.

Tituba became central to the Salem witch trials when she was the first to be accused of witchcraft by Elizabeth Parris and Abigail Williams. Under pressure and physical abuse from Parris, she confessed to practicing witchcraft, including making a "witch cake" and speaking with the devil, and implicated two other women, Sarah Good and Sarah Osborne. Her vivid confession, filled with fantastical details of animals, spirits, and flying, fueled the hysteria and lent credibility to the accusations in Salem, while also serving to protect herself from execution.

She was imprisoned in Boston for over a year and testified in other trials but was never formally tried. In 1693, her case was dismissed, and she was sold to cover her jail fees. Her life after this is unknown, though she may have had a daughter named Violet. Despite her pivotal role, she was not among those later compensated by the Massachusetts government for losses during the trials.
