Estella Havisham, later Estella Drummle, is a central figure in Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations. An orphan like Pip, she is adopted by the wealthy Miss Havisham and deliberately molded into a refined but emotionally unreachable lady, raised to break men’s hearts as revenge for Miss Havisham’s own romantic betrayal.

Though often perceived as cold, Estella’s demeanor is the direct result of this upbringing, leaving her unable to give or return affection—even to her guardian. From childhood, Estella becomes the object of Pip’s longing; her beauty, poise, and social position symbolize everything he imagines he must attain, shaping his dissatisfaction with his humble origins. Despite insisting that she cannot love him, Estella treats Pip with more honesty and regard than she shows other suitors, revealing faint traces of care beneath her icy exterior.

As an adult, she marries the brutish Bentley Drummle, a relationship implied to be abusive, fulfilling Miss Havisham’s teachings at great personal cost. After Drummle’s death, Estella reappears changed by suffering, softened in spirit, and capable of greater emotional understanding.

Dickens provides two endings: one in which Estella, now a mother, shares a brief but poignant reunion with Pip, and another more hopeful, open-ended conclusion where the two part as friends with the suggestion that they may never part again. Unbeknownst to her for most of her life, Estella is the daughter of Abel Magwitch and Molly, whose intertwined histories Pip uncovers in adulthood.
