The Pythia was the high priestess of the Temple of Apollo at Delphi, serving as the Oracle of Delphi and sometimes called the Pythoness. Established by at least the 8th century BC (possibly as early as 1400 BC), she delivered prophecies under divine inspiration from Apollo and became one of the most influential women of the classical Greek world.The Delphic Oracle remained highly prestigious until the late 4th century AD, mentioned by many classical authors including Herodotus, Plato, and Aristotle.

Details of her methods are unclear: classical sources assume contemporary knowledge, while later accounts (1st century BC–4th century AD) provide conflicting stories. One popular account describes her speaking in a frenzied state induced by vapors, with priests interpreting her gibberish into poetic prophecies. Modern scholars argue she likely spoke intelligibly, delivering prophecies in her own voice, sometimes in dactylic hexameter.
