She is Jack’s elderly, widowed mother. She appears for the first time in the second version of the story; in the original version, Jack is cared for by his grandmother instead.

In her initial appearance, Old Mother Twaddle discovers sixpence in her house and gives it to Jack so he can buy a goose at the fair. Instead, Jack trades the money for magic beans.

In her subsequent appearance, she is unnamed, though her characterization remains largely the same. In this version, she sends Jack to sell their cow. When she sees the beans he returns with, she angrily throws them away; some land in the garden, where they grow into a beanstalk that reaches the sky.
