Atla was a shunned witch, born of an unholy union between a human woman and one of the Worms of the Earth, serves as the bridge between mankind and an ancient inhuman race. Half-human and half-reptilian, she lives in isolation, feared and desired by neither world. When Bran Mak Morn seeks forbidden knowledge, she demands intimacy as payment which is an act born not of cruelty, but of longing for the humanity denied to her. In return, she reveals the location of the Black Stone, a sacred relic whose theft will awaken the Worms and unleash horrors long buried beneath the earth.
