For example, in The Secret of the Old Clock, Helen helps Nancy indirectly by giving her charity tickets to sell, which Nancy cleverly uses to gain entry to the Tophams’ home. Helen also accompanies Nancy to summer camp near the Tophams’ property, placing her close to events without being the driving force behind them.

Across the early stories, Helen functions as a supportive presence someone Nancy visits between cases or travels with socially rather than a full investigative partner. She is notably more cautious and vulnerable than Nancy, such as when she cannot swim and must be rescued during a boating accident on Moon Lake. This contrast highlights Nancy’s independence, bravery, and leadership.

As the series evolved, Helen Corning gradually disappeared from the books and was later replaced by more active and adventurous friends. Nonetheless, Helen remains significant as Nancy Drew’s first friend and confidante, grounding the early novels in friendship and everyday teenage life while Nancy steps into the role of a pioneering young detective.
