Emily Grierson is a reclusive Southern woman shaped by isolation and loss. Raised under the strict control of her aristocratic father, she is prevented from courting or marrying and becomes entirely dependent on him. When he dies as Emily nears 30, she refuses for days to acknowledge his death, revealing her inability to let go. Afterward, she lives largely secluded in her decaying family home, cared for by her servant, Tobe.

Emily briefly reenters social life by teaching art and later forming a relationship with Homer Barron, a Northern laborer who is widely believed not to be interested in marriage. Despite this, Emily buys wedding items and arsenic, alarming the town. After Homer is last seen entering her house, he disappears. Soon after, a foul odor comes from Emily’s home, but the town discreetly avoids confronting her.

When she dies, townspeople explore her house and discover Homer Barron’s decomposed body in a locked bedroom, along with evidence that Emily had slept beside the corpse for years. The revelation shows that Emily poisoned Homer to keep him with her permanently, illustrating her tragic inability to accept loss and the passage of time.
